Swimming for babies

Babies are born swimmers, but soon after birth they should be encouraged to swim in a safe environment and preferably without contamination of the water, to enjoy the benefits of the activity.

Babies born in warmer regions with abundant water can be encouraged to start swimming very early, either with their parents in leisure activities or under the guidance of experienced professionals. A new study from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), has shown that babies who learn to swim have the best balance and are also better at grasping objects, than those who can not swim. The results showed that this difference persists even when are children has five years old.

The study involved comparing 19 babies swimmers with a control group of 19 children who had not participated in swimming for babies. All other factors such as parent education, housing and economic conditions were the same except the experience in swimming.

Babies swimmers had participated in swimming lessons for two hours per week from the age of 2 - 3 months, until about 7 months old.

With nearly 5 years of age, baby swimmers and the control group were tested with similar exercises. The exercises included walking on tiptoes, balance on one foot, jumping rope, rolling a ball into a goal and get a bag of beans. The researchers said the results were clear, "we saw clearly what the babies swimmers were better in exercises related to balance and ability to achieve things," said study author Hermundur Sigmundsson.

"It's amazing that specific training for babies to have an effect later in life. The development is a dynamic interaction between maturation, growth and learning. Our study shows that we should never underestimate the learning aspect," concludes Sigmundsson.

Security: Depending on where the classes are taught, the care of the local conditions should be quite frequent.
